“Socio-Spatial Media” or “Spatio-Social Media”?

Ok, I think it is time to get back to blogging…My last post happened at the early stages of one of the worst years of my life and my online productivity was shut down wholesale.  All of the broken links were the catalyst that shut down shop. I was operating under some assumptions that were dead wrong.

But 2010 is a new year and the worst acts of the circus are over and gone. So why not give it the old circus clown try again with a brand new red nose?

Ok, now that that’s over, I’ll get right down to business…

I will begin with an ” cross post of something I did today that could become a significant defining moment in my academic/professional career…(but I have said this before and I was again wrong. dead wrong. but whatever. what have I EVER had to lose?)

I just googled “spatio-social media” and “socio-spatial media” to see if there was such a subset of social media.
That’s because I needed a catchy and intuitive phrase to describe the essence of my particular research. Well, both of them turned up zero hits on google. Does that mean we “own it” if I publish the phrase here and now?

Post a regular article on this site about it…. That will definitely put it on the map…

Urban Planning For Purdue SL Community Virtual Architecture (Fun Draft)

I scoured the internet for a good map of how BM space is organized. I found this hand drawn map that is pretty cool. The original link is here.

Just to give an idea of the spatial scale of Burning Man…Here is an overlay of the Playa on top of Purdue. The “Man” being more or less centered in Academy Park.

Media Display Prism (SnowFlake Lounge Demo in Google Lively)

I have been waiting for the “next” web 3D virtual world tool following Atmosphere & Second Life.
http://people.envision.purdue.edu/~tjrogers/

Though camera/geometry precision and self-building is not yet present, I had fun for a couple hours making my first room (based on my Media Display Prism Framework) and streaming six of my research-related youtube videos onto a virtual lively TV. Fun! Just in time to integrate my son Tristan’s first avatar into the mix.

The computer I used to capture assets for this video didn’t have the chutzpah to capture at very high frame rates, but I did the best I could given the available resources. There are a few video overlays to make up for some ugly spots, but overall, this exercise proved to demonstrate conceptual components of the MDP framework. I am even considering looking into using Lively as a platform for my dissertation–but that needs a lot of looking into.

Tristan Jade

Born Thursday, June 26th 2008 (3:23 pm). Weighing in at a hefty 9 pounds 3 ounces and 22″ tall.  And remember, even though it’s too late to send him a prenatal email, you can still send him a post-natal email. You might have to wait a few years before he responds though… Tristan Jade’s Prenatal Emails

Visualization, Problem Solving, Attention, Transparency, and Power of Perspective

While doing some research on the transparent society, and the power of perspective I discovered this interesting GoogleTechTalk with Daivd Brin and Sheldon Brown.

It’s called “Third Millennium Problem Solving” and has some interesting coverage of topics. I have indexed the topics I responded well to, but this talk may provide some curious insights to others in our area who are interest in the role of visualization, attention-aware systems, and host-empowered methodologies that are coming down the pipe.

05:00 The Transparent Society & Exorarium (Gaming/educational/educational museum setting)

06:00 Progress in Visualization:
-Lenses (telescopes/microscopes)
-Discovery of Perspective
-Printing Press

06:30 Visualization tools provoke Crises of Progress

09:00 How Modeling Techniques fit in to all of this…
both scientific visualization and games require
modeling techniques that are better at creating
worlds for modeling objective and subjective realities.

prioritization factors that mimic prioritization factors of real
life.” “A schematic to demonstrate the effects of orientation.”
